Medication options

The ADHD Nurse will help you explore and understand the different medication options to help with your ADHD. Ensuring you reach the right decision for you and your needs.

In the UK there are 5 types of medicine licensed for the treatment of ADHD.

  • Methylphenidate
  • Lisdexamfetamine
  • Dexamfetamine
  • Atomoxetine
  • Guanfacine

While the medications are not a cure for ADHD, they have been proven to help people with the condition, improving their ability to concentrate, control their impulses and feel overall calmer.

It can feel daunting, the thought of being on medication but our clinicians, will talk you through the medication thoroughly, making sure you are fully comfortable with the decision to proceed with treatment.

This is something very personalised to the individual and would be discussed at length with The ADHD Nurse to establish what would be most suited to meet your needs:

For example:

Education around ADHD Improving general wellbeing
Goal setting Managing emotions
Problem solving Improving sleep
Coping strategies Improving self-esteem
Life style changes Accountability

NHS referral & shared care agreements

The long waiting lists for an assessment with the NHS is the reason that many people choose to seek out a private practice, however, once they receive a diagnosis and choose medication as a form of treatment this can become an expense if accessed privately.

That is why The ADHD Nurse will refer you back to your GP at the NHS with a Diagnostic Report. This report is in line with NHS NICE guidelines which support the acceptance of your diagnosis within the NHS. We advise you discuss shared care with you GP in advance, to ensure they are happy to provide this service.

Please be mindful that not all GP surgeries will accept shared care with private providers and you may need to continue paying for private prescriptions on a monthly basis for the future.
